Helen Mirren is set to receive the Screen Actors Guild’s Life Achievement Award, it was announced today. She will be recognized with the career-achievement honor during the 2022 Screen Actors Guild Awards, which is set to take place on Sunday, Feb. 27, 2022. In addition to her Oscar – for playing Queen Elizabeth II in The Queen, a performance that also earned her a SAG Award and BAFTA, she has three Emmys, a Tony, numerous BAFTA Awards and was made a Dame of the British Empire in 2003. She has won five SAG Awards wins and received 13 nominations over the course of her career, making her the most decorated SAG Life Achievement Award winner according to SAG-AFTRA. In a statement Mirren said in part, “Since I was a young actor starting out, I have always been inspired by and learned from American screen acting, so this award is particularly meaningful for me.” Mirren is also the first recipient of this honor since the 2020 SAG Awards as the 2021 virtual show went without a Life Achievement honoree amid the COVID-19 pandemic. SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher said:

Dame Helen Mirren is quite simply a brilliant and luminous talent. Her work runs the gamut of characters from a not-so-retired CIA super-killer and a ruthless Russian spy handler to a Hungarian cleaning lady and the most exquisite Elizabeth II. She has set the bar very high for all actors and, in role after role, she exceeds even her own extraordinary performances. I’ve always felt a kinship with Helen. She’s the Queen of England and I’m the Queen of Queens. She won an Oscar and I’m left-hander of the year. It’s uncanny. And, it is my deep, personal honor to be the first to congratulate Helen as the 57th recipient of the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award. Bravo, my dear!

On September 28 and 29, Helen Mirren was an unexpected guest at the Bari International Film Festival and an even more unexpected winner of the festival’s Federico Fellini Platinum Award, alongside her husband Taylor Hackford. While the director Paolo Virzì was delivering the awards, Checco Zalone entered the stge to Helen’s and everyone’s surprise, joking “I am delighted to have given you the opportunity to work with me. An award for the authentic love that Helen has for our land“. He later came to the rescue when Mirren’s heel got stuck in the stage, much to her husband’s amusement. Edit: More pictures from the awards ceremony and the master class conversation panel have been added to the photo gallery, alongside video clips from both appearances.

According to People Magazine, the 2021 Screen Actors Guild Awards are nearing and its list of presenters is getting the star treatment. Helen Mirren, Jimmy Fallon, Henry Golding, Cynthia Erivo and Ethan Hawke will present on Sunday, April 4 during the 27th Screen Actors Guild Awards. The stars join Ted Danson, Mary Steenburgen, Lily Collins, Daveed Diggs and Sterling K. Brown, who are already set to present that night. This year’s SAG Awards will be different from past shows. Earlier this month, the guild announced its upcoming awards show will be pre-taped and will only last one hour. “We’re looking at trying to do a unique award ceremony in an hour and leave people saying, which they very rarely do [with an awards show], ‘Man, I wish we had more,'” co-executive producer Todd Milliner told Variety. The show will include the presentation of 13 awards and feature comedy bits as well as the traditional “I Am An Actor” segments from nominees and other presenters. The event will also include an “In Memoriam” segment. According to Variety, the awards will be handed out in the days ahead of the air date in Zoom rooms for each category, where the nominees will gather and the winner will be announced. The winner will then get the chance to make an acceptance speech. That means spoilers are possible, but co-executive producer Kathy Connell hopes that won’t happen. Will & Grace actor Sean Hayes rounds the team of executive producers. “We hope they respect the show enough and everybody does, and their fellow actors, that they don’t want to disappoint the audience at home by letting any surprises go,” Connell said of nominees who will know outcomes ahead of the show’s airdate. The 27th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will be simulcast on TNT and TBS on Sunday, April 4, 2021, at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT, with an encore airing on TNT at 11 p.m. ET/ 8 p.m. PT.

The Curt Bergfors Food Planet Prize was established to find, recognize, and support initiatives and projects that can help us shift to resilient food systems and achieve food security already within this decade. This inaugural year, we received 650+ nominations, illustrating a diverse global community devoted to re-imagining food in all its complexity. Reshaping the food system requires an abundance of ingenious ideas and a broad range of approaches and solutions, some of them disruptive enough to radically cut through value chains and confront current perceptions of what food can be – and how it can be sourced. The challenge is global, this is why the solutions must have the potential to scale, preferably globally. To make it happen requires political will, ample funding, and consumers taking responsibility. It requires insight, and it will take courage. The prizewinners – and finalists – represent some of the many areas we need to explore to save the Food Planet. Responding to the ever-louder emergency calls from both People and Planet, the Curt Bergfors Foundation is doubling its stake in the rescue mission. This year, we’re awarding four – instead of two – US $1 Million prizes. At the recommendation of the Food Planet Prize Jury, one of the Prizes will be shared as the two recipients already collaborate on a key area: alternative sourcing of food and feed.

Something I completely forgot to cover for the site, probably because public appearances have become so rare these days. On July 05, Helen Mirren was honored at the 47th Flaiano International Awards in Abruzzo, Italy. “It is a great honor for me to receive this award, in the name of a giant of the Italian Cinena, Ennio Flaiano. I can’t say how important this award is to me. It was an Italian film, “The Adventure” with Monica Vitti that made me passionate about cinema. I was 16 and worked as a maid in my aunt’s small bed and breakfast, I saw the film in an old English cinema near the sea, on a rainy day. The beauty of the Italian language and the landscape have been formative for me, the mystery and magic have captured my imagination. I fell in love with cinema and the Italian language. I am attracted to the power of Italian directors such as Fellini, Visconti, Sergio Leone, Tinto Brass and Paolo Virzì with whom I have worked. My greatest muse is Anna Magnani, the Italian spirit has captured my artist’s heart, as years later I was captured by the landscapes of Salento, where I am a farmer and I greet all my neighbors in Tiggiano”. A couple of pictures from the press conference, ceremony and photoshoot have been added to the photo gallery.

Here comes another Berlin related update, and probably the final one, since all related video interviews from the festival have been added to the video archive (some have been posted last week already, in case you missed ’em). Several German broadcasters have aired reports on Helen receiving the Honorary Golden Bear and talked with her about the award and her career. For a complete overview of all added videos, have a look below. Enjoy watching.
