CBS Films has released the first teaser trailer for Helen Mirren’s spooky “Winchester: The House That Ghosts Built.” The supernatural thriller is based on the life of eccentric heiress Sarah Winchester, who was convinced that she and her family were haunted by the souls killed by the family’s infamous rifle. Her real-life obsession led to the round-the-clock construction of an enormous 160-room mansion in San Jose, California, designed to keep these evil spirits at bay. The Winchester Mystery House still stands today in northern California and has been named one of the “Most Haunted Places in the World” by Time Magazine. The Winchester Mystery House is one of California’s original and most popular historic attractions. Since opening to the public in 1923, the house has welcomed nearly 12 million people from around the world. Following a medium’s advice, Sarah built a massive house in Northern California to appease the spirits. For the next 38 years, she never stopped building believing that if she continued, she would live forever, and if she stopped, she would die, which she eventually did in 1922 at age 82. Yes, “Winchester” will now be known as “Winchester: The House That Ghosts Built” and will be released on February 2nd, 2018. Helen Mirren and Donald Sutherland’s upcoming drama from Sony Pictures Classics, The Leisure Seeker, was the big winner at Miami Dade College’s Miami Film Festival GEMS 2017 event, which wrapped in Miami Sunday night. A24’s The Florida Project, directed by Sean Baker, and In The Fade, Magnolia Pictures’ Oscar hopeful starring Diane Kruger, were the two runners-up in voting for the coveted Gigi Guermont Audience Award at the 3rd annual edition of the Festival’s fall awards-season event. The Leisure Seeker, directed by Italian maestro Paolo Virzi, was a late addition to the Miami GEMS program. After the devastation wrought on the neighboring Florida Keys by Hurricane Irma in September, Festival organizers collaborated with Sony Classics to screen the film in GEMS with all ticket proceeds from the screening going to the United Way of the Florida Keys to support relief and rebuilding efforts. GEMS audiences voted in record numbers at this festival, making the race for the Audience Award winner extremely competitive. Only a fraction of votes separated the top contenders – Luca Guadagnino’s Call Me By Your Name and Agnes Varda & JR’s Cannes-winning Faces Places also deeply moved the Miami GEMS audience. The awards announcement capped a four-day weekend of superb cinema where the gems of the cinematic season were screened as Florida and Miami premieres. The GEMS Audience Award is named in loving memory of Genevieve “Gigi” Guermont, a brilliant, rare, and timeless individual, a passionate supporter of Miami’s cultural institutions, and was an especially dedicated friend to the Festival, serving actively on the Host Committee, before she lost her battle with Cystic Fibrosis in 2015.

According to Variety, Lionsgate and CBS Films have moved up Helen Mirren’s haunted house movie by three weeks to Feb. 2 and retitled the film, which had been “Winchester,” as “Winchester: The House That Ghosts Built.” Mirren stars as firearms heiress Sarah Winchester along with Jason Clarke, Sarah Snook, and Angus Sampson. Siblings Michael Spierig and Peter Spierig are directing from their own script. Producers are Tim McGahan and Brett Tomberlin. Winchester was convinced that she was haunted by the souls killed at the hands of the Winchester Repeating Rifle. After the sudden deaths of her husband and child, she threw herself into the 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week construction of an enormous mansion designed to keep the evil spirits at bay. Construction at the Winchester mansion in San Jose, Calif., went on continuously from 1884 to 1922 as the original farm house grew into the world’s most unusual labyrinth-mansion (24,000 square feet built at a cost of $5 million), featuring 160 rooms; 2,000 doors; 10,000 windows; nine kitchens; 13 bathrooms; and 47 stairways and fireplaces. “Winchester: The House That Ghosts Built” will open two days before Super Bowl LII against Paramount’s Cloverfield movie.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Helen Mirren and Luke Evans are set to topline Luc Besson’s Anna, with Lionsgate coming on board to co-produce and distribute. Anna, written and directed by Besson, will be produced by his EuropaCorp shingle and starts production in November. The film will be released under Lionsgate’s Summit Entertainment label. Lionsgate UK released Besson’s last movie, the big-budget sci-fi epic Valerian and the City of A Thousand Planets, in the U.K. market. Anna features Mirren, Evans and Cillian Murphy, with Russian model Sasha Luss playing the titular role of Anna. “We are delighted to be reunited with Luc and his EuropaCorp team on another exciting, action-packed film featuring an A-list cast,” Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chairman Patrick Wachsberger and president of acquisitions & co-productions Jason Constantine said in a statement. Marc Shmuger will produce for EuropaCorp. Peter Nichols of Lichter Grossman Nichols Adler & Feldman negotiated the deal for Besson and also reps Luss. No further information on the storyline have been released yet.

Sony Pictures Classics has launched the marvelous trailer for the upcoming “The Leisure Seeker”. Starring Helen Mirren and Donald Sutherland, a runaway couple go on an unforgettable journey in the faithful old RV they call The Leisure Seeker, traveling from Boston to The Ernest Hemingway Home in Key West. They recapture their passion for life and their love for each other on a road trip that provides revelation and surprise right up to the very end. Directed by Paolo Virzì, the dramatic comedy will be released in US theaters on January 19, 2018. Edit: A couple of new production stills from the film have been added as well.

Donald Sutherland and Helen Mirren have left Italy for Canada and are currently on the red carpet at the 42nd Toronto International Film Festival for the premiere of “The Leisure Seeker”. Love is in the air for Helen Mirren, Keira Knightley and Jim Sturgess. The trio have joined the cast of Berlin, I Love You, which marks the latest film in the Cities of Love anthology series launched by Emmanuel Benbihy that already has tackled tales of romance in Paris and New York. Written by Neil La Bute and David Vernon, Berlin, I Love You segments are being directed by Fernando Eimbcke, Dennis Gansel, Massy Tadjedin, Peter Chelsom, Til Schweiger, Justin Franklin, Dani Levy and Dianna Agron. Josef Rusnak will helm the transition sequence that ties up all the episodes. Mirren, Keira Knightley and Jim Sturgess join co-stars Diego Luna, Mickey Rourke, Toni Garrn, Sibel Kekilli, Agron and Rafaelle Cohen, who already boarded the project, which is being shopped to international buyers at Toronto by Highland Film Group and Disrupting Influence’s Glenn Kendrick Ackermann and Jason Piette. The Cities of Love series launched in 2006 with Paris Je T’aime, which was followed by New York, I Love You in 2009. Berlin, I Love You will explore coupling in the German capital, where production is set to start by end of September.
