Helen Mirren couldn’t be busier right now as a L’Oreal Paris ambassador. Her appearance with Viola Davis last week to launch the Age Perfect Cosmetics line has attracted interviews in Allure, Grazia, Vanity Fair and People Magazine. Two new commercials with Helen and Viola have been released as well for the campaign. They have been added to the video archive, alongside some other “Age Perfect” commercials from 2019. And to celebrate the International Women’s Day, L’Oreal Paris and The Prince’s Trust have invited their ambassadors to tell what self-worth means to them and to celebrate the women in their lives who empower them in their moments of self-doubt in a new promotional video. On Thursday, Helen Mirren received the Honorary Golden Bear at the 70th Berlin Film Festival for her life achievement in World Cinema. Over 1.000 additional pictures from the festival’s photocall, press conference and ceremony have been added to the photo gallery. During the press conference, Mirren says she has witnessed a huge improvement in the position of female actors over the course of her career. (She says she prefers the term “actress.” “It has a slightly fin de siècle feel about it that I like,” she says. “But thank you for being politically correct; I approve of political correctness as well, so that’s alright.”) “Oh god, there’s more work to be done, further to go, but it is great, it’s absolutely great,” she says, with gusto. “It just pisses me off that I’m not now 23, and that that world is not open to me, because it is a much better world than it was when I was 23. “I have often been asked if I was angry, and I was profoundly angry about it as I ticked off 20 male characters to one or two female characters if you were lucky. Incidentally it hasn’t changed that much. At least now you have female-led movies, and occasionally it is mostly female (casts) – still very rare, but at least they exist. “But I always said when I was asked that question, and I still believe it, don’t worry about women’s profiles in drama, although you should, but worry about women’s profiles in life – in politics, in particular, and in the professions – and fight for that, and to a certain extent I was right because that world changed, and as night follows day drama and culture – us looking at ourselves through drama, through art – has changed, because they are looking at a different world. Helen Mirren’s latest film “The Good Liar” has been released through digital retailers on January 21 and on Blu-ray Disc and DVD February 04, 2020. The thriller didn’t make much of an impact when it released theaters last November. While it’s not based on masterpiece material and although everything I could tell about the story would be a spoiler (there’s one good liar in the story, but who is it? There’s a 50/50 chance, you do the math), we shouldn’t undervalue the fact that Helen Mirren and Ian McKellen have never collaborated on a film project before, and director Bill Conden gives them two meaty characters to sink their teeth into. I’ve been catching up with Helen’s projects from 2019 that haven’t been screencapped – and with many thanks to the great Mouza, I have not one but two fantastic updates for today. First up is “Anna”, Luc Besson’s KGB assassin thriller that was released last Summer and stayed completely under the radar, most certainly due to the allegations against its director. The film certainly didn’t deserve it. While you have to look past some incredible goofs (USB drives and Windows laptops in the early ’90s?!) I thoroughly enjoyed this film for what it is – popcorn entertainment. It also boasts one of Helen’s funnier characters of late, as Anna’s frosty superior Olga. There’ll always be films about sexy assassins, probably as long as Besson is making movies, but the real stretch would be to give Mirren’s Olga a franchise. Deadline has a first look at Oscar-winning duo Jim Broadbent and Helen Mirren in Roger Michell’s art heist comedy The Duke. As we revealed back in October, the heavyweight Brit acting duo are leading the cast of the film based on the true story of 60-year-old taxi driver Kempton Bunton who, in 1961, stole a Goya painting from the National Gallery in London. Bunton sent a ransom note saying he would only return the picture on condition that the UK government agreed to provide free TV for the elderly. However, it turned out he was spinning a web of lies, with the full story not emerging for another 50 years. The incident was the first, and still only, theft in the National Gallery’s history. Fionn Whitehead and Matthew Goode are also in the cast. The script was written by Richard Bean (One Man, Two Guvnors) and Clive Coleman and the film is produced by Nicky Bentham (Moon) of Neon Films. Backing came from Ingenious Media and Screen Yorkshire. Pathé will distribute the film in the UK, France and Switzerland and is handling sales for the rest of the world.

Congratulations to Helen Mirren for receiving a Golden Globe nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television for “Catherine the Great”. She shares the category with Kaitlyn Dever and Merritt Wever, both for “Unbelievable”, Joey King for “The Act” and Michelle Williams for “Fosse/Verdon”. Mirren is the sole nominee for “Catherine the Great, which has been “overlooked” in the other television categories. The three-hour telecast hosted by Ricky Gervais will air live on NBC coast to coast Sunday, January 5, 2020, at 8:00 p.m. EST/5:00 p.m. PST.
