Helen Mirren is set to receive the Screen Actors Guild’s Life Achievement Award, it was announced today. She will be recognized with the career-achievement honor during the 2022 Screen Actors Guild Awards, which is set to take place on Sunday, Feb. 27, 2022. In addition to her Oscar – for playing Queen Elizabeth II in The Queen, a performance that also earned her a SAG Award and BAFTA, she has three Emmys, a Tony, numerous BAFTA Awards and was made a Dame of the British Empire in 2003. She has won five SAG Awards wins and received 13 nominations over the course of her career, making her the most decorated SAG Life Achievement Award winner according to SAG-AFTRA. In a statement Mirren said in part, “Since I was a young actor starting out, I have always been inspired by and learned from American screen acting, so this award is particularly meaningful for me.” Mirren is also the first recipient of this honor since the 2020 SAG Awards as the 2021 virtual show went without a Life Achievement honoree amid the COVID-19 pandemic. SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher said:

Dame Helen Mirren is quite simply a brilliant and luminous talent. Her work runs the gamut of characters from a not-so-retired CIA super-killer and a ruthless Russian spy handler to a Hungarian cleaning lady and the most exquisite Elizabeth II. She has set the bar very high for all actors and, in role after role, she exceeds even her own extraordinary performances. I’ve always felt a kinship with Helen. She’s the Queen of England and I’m the Queen of Queens. She won an Oscar and I’m left-hander of the year. It’s uncanny. And, it is my deep, personal honor to be the first to congratulate Helen as the 57th recipient of the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award. Bravo, my dear!

Helen Mirren is former Israeli prime minister Golda Meir in this first look for Guy Nattiv’s upcoming biopic “Golda”, as shared by The Hollywood Reporter, which has now started shooting in London. The film is written by Nicholas Martin and set during the Yom Kippur War of 1973, when Egypt, Syria and Jordan launched a surprise attack on Israel to reclaim territory lost during the Six-Day War in 1967. Described as a “ticking-clock thriller,” Golda charts the high-stakes responsibilities Meir faced and the controversial decision she took amid infighting from her hostile all-male cabinet. “Golda Meir was a formidable, intransigent and powerful leader,” said Mirren. “It is a great challenge to portray her at the most difficult moment of her extraordinary life. I only hope I do her justice!” “I have long been an admirer of the great Helen Mirren,” said Nattiv. “She has melted so brilliantly into Golda Meir’s character with incredible talent, intelligence, depth and emotion, doing justice to the richness and complexity of this incredible woman.” As previously announced, Bleecker Street and ShivHans acquired U.S. rights to the film, in a deal negotiated by ICM Independent and CAA Media Finance. “Golda” is produced by Michael Kuhn (Florence Foster Jenkins, The Duchess) for Qwerty Films and by Jane Hooks and Nicholas Martin. The film shoots for six weeks in London and on location in Israel.

Well, Helen Mirren fans, here’s another first look: Despite the film’s release date still being two years out, “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” has now shared a behind-the-scenes look over at DC FanDome, offering a look at what appears to be a massive production. Returning as the titular hero will be Zachary Levi alongside Asher Angel as his non-superhero personality Billy Batson, both joined by Jack Dylan Grazer, Djimon Hounsou, Rachel Zegler, Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu. David F. Sandberg is also coming back to direct the sequel after a successful origin movie. While information revolving around the sequel’s plot remain scarce at this point, we do know that it’ll pick up where the original film left off, which Batson’s foster family now all wielding the power to transform into superheroes. Neither Mirren’s Hespera nor Liu’s Kalypso are characters previously from the Shazam! comics, but both villains are daughters of the Greek Titan Atlas, one of the heroes from Greek mythology that contributes to the acronym Shazam and gives power to him. Shazam! Fury of the Gods is now scheduled to release June 2, 2023. You can watch the featurette below, HD screencaptures have been added to the photo gallery.

On September 28 and 29, Helen Mirren was an unexpected guest at the Bari International Film Festival and an even more unexpected winner of the festival’s Federico Fellini Platinum Award, alongside her husband Taylor Hackford. While the director Paolo Virzì was delivering the awards, Checco Zalone entered the stge to Helen’s and everyone’s surprise, joking “I am delighted to have given you the opportunity to work with me. An award for the authentic love that Helen has for our land“. He later came to the rescue when Mirren’s heel got stuck in the stage, much to her husband’s amusement. Edit: More pictures from the awards ceremony and the master class conversation panel have been added to the photo gallery, alongside video clips from both appearances.

With many thanks to my friend Jess, screencaptures from the Amazon Prime anthology series “Solos” have been added to the photo gallery, in which Helen Mirren starred in the third episode as the titular Peg. “Solos” hasn’t received the best critics upon its June release on the streamer, but Helen has been singled out by most to be show’s highlight – so make sure to give it a go on Prime if you haven’t seen it by now. Since Helen appears in literally every frame of her episode, brace yourself for lots of screencaptures. Enjoy.

Yesterday, Helen Mirren was a special guest of “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” – special, because she did the interview right out of her baththub. Besides promoting “Fast & Furious 9”, they talked about Helen confronting a black bear that was trying to sneak onto her porch and the rather familiar story of The Who’s Keith Moon crashing her dressing room during an intermission of 1975’s “Teeth ‘n’ Smiles”. The full segment can be watched below and in the video archive, screencaptures have been added to the photo gallery.

PatheUK has debuted a new trailer for the comedy ‘The Duke’ starring Jim Broadbent and Helen Mirren. The film follows a true story that celebrates a man who was determined to live a meaningful life. Set in 1961, it follows the story of Kempton Bunton, a 60-year old taxi driver, who stole Goya’s portrait of the Duke of Wellington from the National Gallery in London. It was the first, and remains the only, theft in the Gallery’s history. Kempton proceeded to send ransom notes declaring that he would only return the painting on the condition that the government invest more in care for the elderly, specifically bringing attention to his long-running campaign for pensioners to receive free television. What happened next is the stuff of legends…only 50 years later did the full story emerge and it was revealed that Kempton had spun a web of lies. The only truth was that he was a good man, determined to change the world and save his marriage – how and why he used the Duke to achieve this, is a wonderfully uplifting tale that will be seen on film for the first time. The film hits UK cinemas on September 3rd.
