Yesterday, Bryan Cranston, Helen Mirren, Diane Lane and Michael Stuhlbarg have attended the New York premiere for “Trumbo” at the MoMa. Additionally, on November 1, Helen has attended the Shakespeare Theatre Gala honoring director Julie Taymor. As quoted by The Washington Post, “Julie is a great director and a great friend. That’s why I wanted to be here,” Mirren said in a brief pre-dinner interview. “She was the first woman to direct me, and that meant very much to me.” Really? The first woman? “Well,” Mirren said, “the first woman to direct me in anything of that scope. And as a woman director, she has faced great adversity.” Pictures from both events have been added to the photo gallery.

Today, they are at the centre of British cultural life and among our greatest exports – the acting dames, an exclusive club of stage and screen greats who were honoured for their services to drama. But, lurking in the BBC archives – from long before their talents were recognised by royal decree – we find the early work and some career defining moments of Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Diana Rigg and Helen Mirren. David Tennant narrates the story of our dames of classic drama, from a golden age of British television drama. “Dames of Classic Drama” airs on BBC Four on November 8, 20:00.

There’s no resting for Helen Mirren these days. After promoting “Woman in Gold” in Tokyo, she has returned to Beverly Hills this week for the premiere of “Trumbo” as well as the 29th Annual Israel Film Festival. Mirren, speaking of her love for Israel, shared her experience working on a Kibbutz and sleeping on the beach in Eilat while visiting the country in 1967. She further noted that Israel played a significant role in her career. “My visit to Israel is part of the building blocks that have made me into the actress that I am,” she said. “I think that through all the difficulties and all the pain that Israel has suffered in the past and will in the future, the great thing that Israel has is Israelis.” Pictures from all three events have been added to the photo gallery.

Dame Helen Mirren has been named Britain’s most empowering woman, in a poll voted by 2,000 other women. Helen Mirren topped the poll, followed by J.K Rowling, Michelle Obama, Adele, Jessica Ennis-Hill, Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Lawrence and Kate Winslet who all made the top 10. As part of the poll, commissioned by Lil-Lets, 55 per cent said that empowered stars make them feel more confident about their appearance and the things they do. If anyone could make you feel empowered, it’s Helen Mirren. Not only does she have four Emmys, five Baftas, two Golden Globes, a damehood – but she also speaks perfectly about body image and confidence. ‘I’m a woman that loves make-up and getting dressed up. As I get older, I don’t look as good, but I don’t give a damn. There’s a huge pressure on young girls to look a certain way these days but, as I age, I’ve lost that incredible insecurity of youth.’
