The past 15 years have included lots of classical roles for Mirren, ranging from Strindberg to O’Neill, Racine and Tennessee Williams. It’s a good season for Helen. Not only does she continue her reign at New York’s theatre awards for her performance in “The Audience”, The World Jewish Congress has also honored her with the WJC Recognition Award for her role in “Woman in Gold” and for helping to educate the public about the issues of Nazi-looted art. A ceremony date has not been announced, but pictures from yesterday’s Drama Desk Awards and Stephen Daldry’s 2015 Tony Nomination Celebration have been added to the photo gallery.

Let’s continue with Helen’s theatre performances in the 1990s. Due to the success of Prime Suspect, her theatre appointments in that decade was limited but nevertheless prestigious – with roles from Ayckborn (Woman in Mind aka the one play without a picture), Turgenev twice with A Month in the Country at the West End and on Broadway, her third Cleopatra and Donald Margulies’ Collected Stories. On June 1, The Shakespeare Society will host their third annual Playing Shakespeare Celebration at The Players. Christopher Plummer will present The Shakespeare Medal to Dame Helen Mirren. The Shakespeare Medal is awarded in recognition of extraordinary contribution to the appreciation of the Bard. Previous recipients include Professor Harold Bloom, Claire Bloom, Sir Derek Jacobi, Sir Peter Hall, Christopher Plummer, Michael Kahn, Richard Easton, and Sir Kenneth Branagh.

To celebrate Helen’s Broadway success with “The Audience”, details on all of her stage performances from the 1980s have been added. While this decade will be remembered best for a couple of iconic screen performances, Helen was equally busy in the theatre, playing both Jacobean tragedy (The Duchess of Malfi), provocative new plays (Extremities) as well as Cleopatra, Madame Bovary and Arthur Miller’s Two-Way Mirror. Helen’s a winner these days, picking up an Outer Critics Circle Awards for Outstanding Actress in a Play, as well as the Broadway.com Audience Choice Award as Favorite Actress in a Play, both for “The Audience”. Let’s hope this is the road to the Tonys 🙂 Pictures from both events have been added to the photo gallery. And just in time for her current success on Broadway, Helen’s theatre work will be spotlighted and updated throughout the next weeks.

The “Prime Suspect” coverage comes to an end with the spotlight on the final series, 2006’s “The Final Act”. The conclusion of this iconic series won Helen another Primetime Emmy Award as well as a Golden Globe nomination. To learn more about this episode, visit the career page. Helen Mirren continues her busy schedule with additional appearances at the New York Theatre Workshop’s 2015 Spring Gala and the unveiling of her caricature for Sarids. Helen continues to hit the New York scene these past days with appearances at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Benefit as well as the Drama Desk Awards Nominees reception. Pictures from both events have been added to the photo gallery, with additions from the Tony Nominees reception uploaded as well.
