2024 only saw the theatrical release of the much-delayed “White Bird”. Originally filmed in 2021, the drama – promoted as a sequel to the popular “Wonder”, although presenting an individual story set during World War 2 – was set for a release in 2022 before Lionsgate removed the film from its release schedule. A new 2023 release was upstaged by the SAG-AFTRA strike and the end-of-year release was again pushed to, finally, October of 2024. When it did release, with little promotion, audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film a rare average A+ grade.
It was not a quiet year, however. After a much-delayed schedule due to the SAG-Aftra strike, Helen Mirren filmed the second season of “1923” in Austin, Texas, and joined Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley and Celia Imrie for the much-anticipated screen adaptation of Richard Osman’s “The Thursday Murder Club” for Netflix. Mirren would reunite with Brosnan for Guy Ritchie’s crime drama television series “The Associate” (its current working title), which is centered around two warring families based in London whose enterprises stretch all corners of the globe – and the fiercely loyal “fixer”, played by Tom Hardy, charged with protecting one of them at all costs. All projects were wrapped in the second half of 2024 and scheduled for a 2025 release.
