Starring David Janssen, Cloris Leachman and Susan Saint James, Helen can be seen in a supporting role as the real-life First Class stewardess Mary Sloan. As the first movie spotlight I have chosen Joel Hershman’s comedy “Greenfingers” (2000). Inspired by true events, a group of prison mates participate in a garden project that leads them to the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show. Welcome to the Helen Mirren Archives, a new online resource on the career of Dame Helen Mirren. The aim of this website is to chronicle Miss Mirren’s work from her beginnings in the theatre to her most recent films. For each project, there will be a spotlight with additional information and production notes as well as pictures and video clips. With over 100 performances in film, television and the theatre, there will be plenty of coverage. The second main focus will rely on “The Archives”, a year-by-year review of Helen’s career, accompanied by quotes and interviews. This site won’t focus on latest pictures and appearances – there are other sites covering this and being good at it. However, news on projects and such will be collected. As part of TCM’s annual “31 Days of Oscar” showcase in February of 2014, the network will present the world premiere of brand-new documentary “Oscar,” which traces the history of the Academy Awards. The special is co-directed and penned by filmmakers Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman (“Common Threads: Stories from the Quilt”). It features extensive clips from Oscar-winning and nominated films, plus behind-the-scenes ceremony footage from the archives of Hollywood Newsreel. Much of this has never been shown before. The doc’s high-profile interviewees include, among many others, George Clooney, Annette Benning, Tom Hanks, Ben Kingsley, Helen Mirren, Whoopi Goldberg, Steven Spielberg, Michael Moore and frequent Oscar host Billy Crystal. “Oscar” is set to air on February 1, the opening night of “31 Days of Oscar.” Each night’s lineup will feature a complete set of nominated films that faced each other in a particular category.

The biopic “Phil Spector, directed by David Mamet and starring Al Pacino and Helen Mirren, has been one of HBO’s big contenders at this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards with 11 nominations. As the winners were revealed tonight in a live ceremony that aired on CBS, “Spector” failed to win in any of its nominated categories. Helen Mirren, who was nominated for her performance as Spector’s attorney Linda Kenney Baden in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or Movie category lost to Laura Linney for “The Big C”. Al Pacino lost in the Lead Actor category to Michael Douglas’ performance in “Behind the Candelabra”, which is also helmed by HBO and won three out of its 15 nominations, including the Emmy for Outstanding Miniseries. Helen Mirren did not attend the Primetime Emmy Awards this year.

According to The Wrap, Participant Media is backing DreamWorks’ upcoming drama “The Hundred-Foot Journey,” starring Helen Mirren. The companies have previously partnered on a number of notable films, including “The Help,” “Lincoln” and the upcoming WikiLeaks drama “The Fifth Estate.” Based on the best-selling book by Richard Morais, the film centers on an Indian family that moves to Southern France and opens a restaurant a hundred feet across the street from a Michelin starred French restaurant. Their incursion in the realm of haute cuisine stirs up an epic food stand-off.

“The Hundred-Foot Journey” co-stars Manish Dayal and is directed by Lasse Hallstrom (“The Cider House Rules”). Steven Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey and Juliet Blake are producing, with Participant’s Jeff Skoll and Jonathan King serving as executive producers. Production will begin next week in France and India; the film is scheduled for release in U.S. theaters on Aug. 8, 2014. The Walt Disney Co. is distributing the film in the United States and in select international territories, while Mister Smith Entertainment is handling distribution in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. DreamWorks’ partner Reliance will distribute the film in India.

Helen Mirren shares her category with Jessica Lange (American Horror Story: Asylum), Laura Linney (The Big C), Elisabeth Moss (Top of the Lake) and Sigourney Weaver (Political Animals).

This is Helen Mirren’s 11th Primetime Emmy nomination. She holds the record in the Lead Actress in a Miniseries or Movie category with four previous wins for “Prime Suspect: The Lost Child” (1996), “The Passion of Ayn Rand” (1999), “Elizabeth I.” (2006) and “Prime Suspect: The Final Act” (2007). The 65th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, will air live on Sunday, September 22 (8pm ET / 5pm PT) on CBS.
