Helen Mirren and Bill Condon were on hand at the Las Vegas CinemaCon on Monday to attend the Warner Bros. Pictures panel to promote the upcoming release of Condon’s thriller “The Good Liar”. Helen’s interview for the film was clickbait-worthy when she shared her opinion on Netflix, so in case you’re wondering what the “Helen Mirren disses Netflix” is all about, here’s Vanity Fair‘s summary: Helen Mirren has a love-hate relationship with Netflix. How do we know this? Because at a presentation for her new film at CinemaCon on Tuesday, the actress had this to say: “I love Netflix, but fuck Netflix.” The dame, according to Variety, received “thunderous applause” for her comment. (After all, she was attending a convention for studios and theater owners.) Mirren was on hand to help Warner Bros. introduce her upcoming film The Good Liar, a thriller co-starring Ian McKellen. She also expanded on her “Fuck Netflix” mindset, praising the glory of going to the movies in a traditional theater: “There is nothing like sitting in the cinema,” she added, per Variety. Pictures from the event have been added to the photo gallery.

The day after the Academy Awards, Helen Mirren was a guest at the Temple Emanu-El Streicker Center in New York to talk about “Woman in Gold” and the story behind the film. Reality became a perfect film plot: A stunning Gustav Klimt portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer, a Jewish society woman in Vienna in the early 20th century, was stolen by the Nazis in Austria in 1941. Six decades later, declaring that theft irrelevant, the Austrian government refused to return the painting to the woman’s niece. But the 81-year-old, who’d fled Vienna during the Holocaust, refused to be a victim again and fought back… all the way to the US Supreme Court. Helen Mirren, who received a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for playing Maria Altman, discussed the ironic transformation of the portrait of a Jewish woman into an Austrian national treasure, her niece’s long legal battle and the importance of pursuing truth. Pictures from the conversation have been added to the photo gallery.

Buoyed by Mendelssohn’s fairy music and perhaps a flute or two of champagne, supporters of the Academy of Music gathered Saturday night at the hall to celebrate its birthday. Helen Mirren was the special guest for the Academy of Music 162nd Anniversary Concert. This year’s iteration of the benefit, to which tickets cost from $350 to $1,950 for the concert, dinner, and ball, featured Mirren as host, narrator of excerpts from A Midsummer Night’s Dream – and, she joked, as adopted Philadelphian. The words she has already learned you needed to know to pass as a local, she told the crowd, were anything but Shakespeare: hoagie, jawn, and Double Doink. Mirren also spoke passionately about the importance of arts education, the audience of tomorrow, and future generations of Academy supporters. Addressing the audience way up high in the Academy, which she took to be populated with a younger crowd, she said: “We believe in you, we have faith in you, help us out.” Many already have. This year, 1,800 tickets were sold for the concert and 1,400 for the dinner and ball at the Bellevue, a spokesperson said, a little under last year’s 2,100 tickets to the concert and 1,500 for the dinner and ball. The event raised $2.2 million gross (before expenses), slightly more than last year’s $2 million. Net proceeds will be split between the orchestra and academy restoration projects. You can read more about the evening in this in-depth article by The Philadelphia Inquirer.

According to Playbill, the 2019 Academy of Music Anniversary Concert and Ball will feature the talents of Oscar and Tony winner Helen Mirren. The stage and screen legend is set to take the stage at the January 26 event at the historic Philadelphia landmark. She will be joined by the Philadelphia Orchestra under the baton of Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin, who also recently took the reins at New York’s Metropolitan Opera. “The Academy of Music is a beacon of historic Philadelphia, and The Philadelphia Orchestra’s annual visit is a treasured moment,” said Nézet-Séguin. “I am thrilled to be returning next month with Helen Mirren, one of the greatest actors of our time and an artist I very much admire, for an evening of words and music to remember.” The white-tie event will begin with a pre-concert reception at the Academy of Music, followed by the concert and subsequent celebrations at the Bellevue Hotel. Concert and Ball tickets are available at TheAcademyBall.org. At the Met, Nézet-Séguin recently conducted the premiere of Michael Mayer’s new staging of La Traviata, marking his first time taking the podium after officially assuming the title of music director. He is also set to lead productions of Pelléas et Mélisande and Dialogues des Carmélites later this season.
