On Thursday, Helen Mirren received the Honorary Golden Bear at the 70th Berlin Film Festival for her life achievement in World Cinema. Over 1.000 additional pictures from the festival’s photocall, press conference and ceremony have been added to the photo gallery. During the press conference, Mirren says she has witnessed a huge improvement in the position of female actors over the course of her career. (She says she prefers the term “actress.” “It has a slightly fin de siècle feel about it that I like,” she says. “But thank you for being politically correct; I approve of political correctness as well, so that’s alright.”) “Oh god, there’s more work to be done, further to go, but it is great, it’s absolutely great,” she says, with gusto. “It just pisses me off that I’m not now 23, and that that world is not open to me, because it is a much better world than it was when I was 23. “I have often been asked if I was angry, and I was profoundly angry about it as I ticked off 20 male characters to one or two female characters if you were lucky. Incidentally it hasn’t changed that much. At least now you have female-led movies, and occasionally it is mostly female (casts) – still very rare, but at least they exist. “But I always said when I was asked that question, and I still believe it, don’t worry about women’s profiles in drama, although you should, but worry about women’s profiles in life – in politics, in particular, and in the professions – and fight for that, and to a certain extent I was right because that world changed, and as night follows day drama and culture – us looking at ourselves through drama, through art – has changed, because they are looking at a different world. So change the world and culture will change alongside that.” Pictures and video clips from all events, as well as the 1 1/2 hours long conversation at the Berlinale Talents, have been added additionally. Enjoy all the new updates.

London is among the cities taking part in the World’s Big Sleep Out, aiming to raise £38m. Dame Helen Mirren read bedtime stories to a crowd camped in London’s Trafalgar Square overnight, part of a global effort to raise cash to tackle homelessness. The actress was among the high-profile names supporting the World’s Big Sleep Out event, alongside actor Will Smith in New York’s Times Square. Survival bags were set up as supporters braved the cold as part of the global drive to raise 50 million US dollars (£38 million) for homelessness charities. Among those sleeping out overnight in London was ITV News presenter Julie Etchingham. The World’s Big Sleep Out Campaign was created by Josh Littlejohn, the co-founder of the charity Social Bite which is based in Scotland. Sleep outs were also taking place in Edinburgh, Cardiff and Dublin, as well as across the globe in Brisbane, LA, New York and Chicago – with organisers expecting 50,000 people to take part in total.

During an onstage chat at the “Helen Mirren and Hawk Koch Discuss The Magic of Movies” event on Friday hosted by the SAG/AFTRA Foundation and the Producers Guild of America, Mirren regaled the audience with the story of being invited to tea at the Queen’s Sandringham estate, as reported by People. “She invited me for tea,” said Mirren, assuming she would be attending a large event. “I thought it was going to be in a room with 200 other people, which it often is. I’ve met her once before and it was in a room with 200 other people. So I said, ‘Oh well I can manage that.’ So it was at the horsey place and the message came to me that the Queen would like to invite you to tea, she knows you’re here. So I walk in, and there’s like eight people sitting around a table. Prince Philip, the Queen, a Sheik of somewhere or other and a couple of horsey people. I know absolutely nothing about horses, at all, and the Queen knows everything about horses. Then I got a cup of tea and the Queen, in particular, was having a very intense conversation about what’s in the sandwiches with Prince Philip, very important. ‘What is this? What’s in here?’” Mirren explained. “The milk is on the other side of Prince Philip and I want some milk in my tea, but my brain goes completely dead and I cannot remember how to address Prince Philip. I mean, is it sir? Is it your majesty? Is it your highness? Is it rude to ask him to pass the milk? Or should I just ask for a lackey? I finished up not having any milk. I just couldn’t sort it out. It’s a lesson in embarrassment, but they were lovely, they were utterly gracious,” she said. Pictures from the discussion panel have been added to the photo gallery.

To promote their new film, the actors took to the Broadway stage, and the cast turned their cheeky banter into an impromptu love song. “We are so outside of our comfort zones,” Helen Mirren was saying as she sat with Ian McKellen onstage at the Booth Theater on Sunday night. The two are no strangers to the New York stage; Mirren, 74, and McKellen, 80, played opposite each other in a Broadway production of “Dance of Death” in 2001. But this time, they were the surprise guests at “Freestyle Love Supreme,” the improvisational hip-hop comedy show that was co-created by Lin-Manuel Miranda. The esteemed British actors, co-stars in the forthcoming film “The Good Liar,” didn’t rap; instead, they were interviewed by the show’s M.C., Anthony Veneziale, about their personal and professional camaraderie, and the result was turned into an impromptu love song by the regular cast onstage. The fact that “Helen” and “McKellen” rhyme was not lost on the rappers. A complete bit on the evening can be read over at The New York Times, while pictures have been added to the photo gallery.
