Lionsgate’s Summit label has decided to give Luc Besson’s Anna a high-profile summer release. The crime-thriller, starring Russian supermodel and actress Sasha Luss opposite Helen Mirren, will open in theaters on June 21. Anna’s opening was put on hold last year when Belgian-Dutch actress Sand Van Roy filed a complaint in May 2018 accusing the director of drugging and raping her at a Paris Hotel. In November, five more women came forward in a report in French investigative magazine Mediapart, alleging sexual misconduct. In total, at least nine separate women have accused the director of sexual assault and harassment. In late February of this year, the Paris prosecutor’s office dismissed the rape charges after an investigation failed to turn up evidence to support Roy’s allegation. Nevertheless, promoting Anna could prove problematic in terms of putting Besson in front of the press. Lionsgate and Summit acquired domestic rights to the movie before the rape charge and other allegations. The movie is his first directorial effort since Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets — which featured Van Roy — hit theaters in 2017, grossing $225 million globally. Anna also stars Luke Evans, Cillian Murphy, Eric Godon and Anna Krippa. The story follows former model who turns government assassin (Luss). Mirren plays her boss. Toy Story 4 and Child’s Play also open nationwide over the June 21-23 weekend. Edit: An international teaser trailer, which features completely different scenes, has been added as well.

Helen Mirren will be featured in a documentary about HandMade Films by AMC, entitled “An Accidental Studio” and slated to release on May 04, 2019. While her appearance is listed as “archival footage”, let’s hope it’s a great vintage interview she did for “The Long Good Friday” instead of film clips. This feature length documentary tells how ardent Monty Python fan George Harrison was drawn into the industry by rescuing Life of Brian when funding fell apart at the last minute, and how his company, HandMade Films, then went on to dominate the British movie scene with its ethos of making maverick films that everyone else had rejected. After pursuing separate projects on the story of HandMade Films, producer-directors Bill Jones, Ben Timlett and Kim Leggatt combined forces. Their documentary features new, exclusive interviews with the likes of Michael Palin, Terry Gilliam, Richard E. Grant and others in the HandMade story. DCD Rights CEO Nicky Davies Williams says additional effort was made to find previously unseen, unheard interviews with Harrison and others who were important to HandMade’s success, like Bob Hoskins. “In this way, the film gives new life to every voice in the story and provides the viewer with something they have never seen before.”

Helen Mirren has promoted her involvement with The Prince’s Trust and its upcoming awards ceremony on today’s Good Morning Britain. She also talked about the pressure on young actors today because of the scrutiny of social media – so it’s quite telling that GMB chose to go with “Helen Mirren ” as their video headline. Go figure! Mirren explained it’s been amusing to run into the family since The Queen was released, and that Harry and William, in particular, seem to enjoy the oddness of it all. She said, “Prince Charles is very, very tactful. Harry and William have mentioned it to me and have been very funny and very cool about it.” Harry, she noted, likes to make jokes about it: “I think Harry once said, when I was at an awards ceremony, he said, ‘And Granny is here.’” How does Mirren feel about being called acting royalty? Of her reaction when faced with that description, she said, “Maybe for the first one second and then very quickly I disabuse them of that fact!” Screencaptures from the programme have been added to the photo gallery and the video has been archived as well.
