Professor E A J Honigman, University of Newcastle, and John Dixon Hunt, University of York, explore the atmosphere of the play and its qualities of sadness and ‘dark’ comedy. Its mood of romantic dream is set against the reality of discord and suffering, with special emphasis on the treatment of Malvolio. The range of possibilities for interpretation in the theatre is also discussed. The reverse side comprises readings by Sir Michael Redgrave, Helen Mirren and Prunella Scales.
