People Magazine spoke with Helen Mirren during last week’s Cannes Film Festival: It’s been two years since Helen Mirren covered PEOPLE’s Beautiful Issue, and the Oscar winner is still preaching the power of swagger. The L’Oréal Paris ambassador spoke to PEOPLE this week from the Cannes Film Festival about her own journey to self-acceptance. Mirren, 78, recognizes that there are “beautiful people in the world,” like Naomi Campbell and David Beckham, but she does not fall into that category, “which is fine by me,” she says. “I look okay, but I’m not that beautiful. But we are all individuals and we all have our own individuality. And I think ultimately it’s just embracing that and allowing yourself to be what you are.” Despite this, Mirren notes that young women are “terribly vulnerable” to wanting to be something else. For the actress, it was aspiring to be England’s “It” girl of the ’60s. “I desperately wanted to be Twiggy,” she shares, “and I absolutely was not Twiggy in any sense.” However, the 1923 actress continues, “The real trick is to learn to accept yourself and love yourself, accept your absolute individuality and be proud of it.” During her time in Cannes, Mirren also attended the Lights on Women Award ceremony on May 24, which was launched by L’Oréal Paris in 2021 and celebrates future female filmmakers. The complete article can be read over at People Magazine.

Dame Helen Mirren will host the D-Day 80 national commemorative event in Portsmouth. The Ministry of Defence, Royal British Legion, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and the Normandy Memorial Trust will celebrate the work of UK and other forces at the port city, where the Allies left for the beaches of Normandy during the Second World War. Dame Helen will present the event, which takes place on the eve of the 80th anniversary. Helen Mirren and Taylor Hackford are the testimonials of the “Centro Ilma”, the multidisciplinary institute for the prevention and fight against tumors that the Lilt of Lecce is completing on the outskirts of Gallipoli and which will deal with applied research on environmental causes of cancer, early diagnosis, physical rehabilitation and psychological support, as well as home health and social care for terminally ill patients and scientific dissemination. A “popular initiative” project, financed entirely thanks to the donations and solidarity of the Salento population. The golden couple of cinema, husband and wife in life, will support the awareness campaigns on the prevention of oncological diseases promoted by the Lecce Cancer League, as well as the completion of the Ilma Center directed by the oncologist Giuseppe Serravezza. The couple also created two video messages to support the Institute and research. Hackford also underlined in particular the need to say a firm “no” to smoking as the first fundamental prevention action. “The contact with the two artists took place in a few days”, explained the oncologist Serravezza. “When we presented them with the Ilma Center and the activities carried out by Lilt of Lecce, the couple, despite being abroad and busy on set in different places, immediately and willingly accepted our invitation. A demonstration of extraordinary sensitivity and commitment, translated into concrete action in no time. For this we extend our most sincere thanks to them.”

According to Variety, Amblin’s film adaptation of Richard Osman’s novel “The Thursday Murder Club” is finally taking shape, with “Harry Potter” and “Home Alone” filmmaker Chris Columbus set to direct. Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan and Ben Kingsley are being eyed for three of the four lead roles in the project. The book, released in 2020, tells the story of four septuagenarian friends who live in a retirement community and solve cold cases for fun. When a shady property developer is found dead, the four find themselves in the middle of their first live crime. Publishing rights for the book were sold in the biggest debut novel deal for a decade. Amblin Partners scored worldwide rights to the film after a competitive auction that attracted interest from 14 studios. It’s been a strong year for Amblin, whose series “Masters of the Air” launched with more viewers in its opening weekend than any Apple TV+ series ever has in its first season, according to the streamer. On Tuesday, Osman teased the imminent casting news, writing on X, “Just been on a call with Amblin, and the cast for #TheThursdayMurderClub movie is insanely great, I think people are going to love it. Official announcements very soon, and can’t wait to share it with everyone.” “The Thursday Murder Club” spawned a successful series from Osman that’s sold over 10 million copies globally, including 2021’s “The Man Who Died Twice,” 2022’s “The Bullet That Missed,” 2023’s “The Last Devil to Die,” and a planned fifth book set to release in 2025.

In a peaceful retirement village, four unlikely friends meet weekly in the Jigsaw Room to discuss unsolved crimes; together they call themselves the Thursday Murder Club. When a local developer is found dead with a mysterious photograph left next to the body, the Thursday Murder Club suddenly find themselves in the middle of their first live case. As the bodies begin to pile up, can our unorthodox but brilliant gang catch the killer, before it’s too late?
